I don’t feel a need to write a book on “what you should and shouldn’t do”. I don’t have an agenda. I just enjoy writing and writing and writing. And I have a very bad habit of making lists. I have to stop myself. I can’t. I’m a writer. I can’t.
A lot of writers seem to be obsessed with lists and obsess over their own lists. A lot of writers I know have a list of things they just cant do. I hate writing lists. I have lists of ways I can be better at my job. I have lists of things I need to do in my life. I have lists of things I need to accomplish. I have lists of things I need to learn more about. I have lists of things I need to do before I die.
Well-known list-maker Jim Rohn once said, “You can’t have it all.” To which I say, “I don’t know how to have it all.” That’s not a bad thing though, because life is full of things you can’t have all, of things you can’t do all, and of things you can’t learn all. You need to make your own lists.
I’m not a list-maker myself, but I do use them when needed to fill my head with all the things I know I need to do and what I know I need to learn. I need to learn that I can’t do the things I have planned, and I need to learn that I cannot do the things I don’t want to do. I have to learn that I can’t make lists.
My list-making has an important aspect too. I can use it to fill my head with all the things I need to do, but it also fills mine. It’s the same thing. It’s just in different ways.
Lists are a great way for you to organize your thoughts, because you get to see them in a different way. You can see what you need to do and how you could do it, but you can also see what you know you need to do and how you can do it.
