It’s a lot of pain to get an up-to-date list of people who have died or broken things. I’ve been here for a few weeks, just to see if anyone is going to come along. The whole thing seems so far off.
VLANs are like bridges. They are necessary for many things that are not a part of the network. They are also a fireable target because they are the places on your network that can be attacked by intruders. In reality, VLANs are what allows hackers to make their way through your network and do their dirty work. In fact, I think a lot of people forget that they even are a thing.
If you’re not using a firewall to protect your network, your VLANs are the places you connect your computers to. In other words, they are the connections that allow you to access your computers. In theory, if you have the most computers on your network, you’re probably using the most VLANs.
In our experience though, the more VLANs you use, the more likely you are to get a lot of traffic. In fact, we’ve found that the more VLANs you use, the more likely you are to get more traffic. For example, if you use 10 VLANs and one of those 10 is flooded with traffic, then the one with less VLANs will probably be flooded with traffic.
vlan leak is when your computers are connected to the same network, but you have different VLANs. For example, if you have two computers connected to the same network, but each has it’s own vlan, then you have two separate networks and your computers are not connected to the same network.
VLANs are one of those simple things that can cause a lot of trouble in a home. If you are on the same network, but you have two computers connected to the same network, you can still get very confusing information from your clients.
So what happens if you have two computers that are connected to the same network, but they have different VLANS? They are no longer connected to the same network, so you now have two networks in your network. So now your clients have two VLANs, and now they have no idea where, exactly, they are.
That’s the beauty of VLANs. If you connect two computers to the same network, and they both have the same VLAN, you are now connected to two networks (that’s one more network, and one less network, of course). What happens next is that any devices that have both VLANs on them will just send and receive data in both directions. This is called VLAN-leaking.
